You are cordially invited

Who: OTA!
Where: The Keller house (A large Victorian House)
When: Evening

Janie wasn't surprised when Phillip asked her to do something in addition to her list of things to do regarding the campground incident, including helping in the lab, getting set up for shooting lessons, and getting supplies. He wanted to throw a dinner party for something he'd done at work. He asked that she hire a catering service and send out invitations.

After getting more information from him, she discovered that his company had discovered a way to make cheaper transitior radios. They would sell for $29.95, and the company was certain that would increase sales.

She thought the party was nice, but knew that part of it was to alleviate some of the mystery of the place. Phillip's family had once been rich and well-known, but over the years they had begun to fade into obscurity. When Phillip's pretty wife died sixteen years ago, he closed off the mansion and was rarely seen until several months ago.

Hours that could have been spent learning how to kill things, or studying so she could understand more science were spent cleaning, closing drafts, and giving out invitations. She was sure to give Mr.Chow one, since she was rather fond of the grumpy old man, almost begging that he come to the party. There was the bridge club, because they were her best friends, and all of the high society people, since Phillip insisted on it. She also invited Gloria and the people she'd seen around Rev.Templeton's church. Lynn was instructed(against Phillip's wishes) to invite as many friends as possible.

She was told not to invite anyone from the Texaco, so of course, she did. It would be a lively party, and she hoped to get her friends alone for at least a few minutes to talk about things.

"Well, howdy, miss Janie -- quick question. What's wrong with the grasshopper drinks?" Fred inquired.

Gloria came in and greeted Janie as well. Hello.

She made that motion people do when they want to hug someone but not sure if they should.

May I hang my coat somewhere?

"Server said something about not trying them," Fred mused. "Do they have real grasshoppers or something?"
drkenison: (Standing)

Gloria gave her a hug. The server said the butler was too busy.

She pulls offer her coat and hands it to Janie.

"So how do you know miss Janie, ma'am?" Fred inquired, looking to Gloria, as they'd yet to be formally introduced - or informally for that matter.

She came with some friends to speak to me at the university. Gloria realized she hadn't been introduced either and offered her hand. Dr. Gloria Kenison.

And you are?

"Fred Wilson, licensed taxidermist and civil defense man," Fred said with a cheerful smile, shaking the offered hand with a firm grip. "Yeah, she's been all digging in folk's business lately, hasn't she? Good enough kid, though. Certainly means well. And she says I don't have rabies."
drkenison: (Experiment)

[personal profile] drkenison 2013-02-05 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
She's a very eager student. Gloria smiled after shaking his hand. I was glad to give you a clean bill of health Mr. Wilson. Rabies can be very serious.

"Ah, so you're the one put her up to it," Fred said, looking contemplative. "And probably the person she delivered the possum to. So maybe you can tell me, what exactly was wrong with it, did you find out?"
drkenison: (Experiment)

[personal profile] drkenison 2013-02-05 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
I believe her concern for you was as great as my own. Gloria admitted. Now she wondered how much she should tell him. She took a moment, looking at the others who were at the party before answering.

It appears to be a virus that affected the possum. I am still running some diagnostics on the samples that we have collected of the disease. I am not familiar with the pathogen but I have asked some colleagues for their opinions and some more reference materials but I have yet to hear back.

She hoped she was both giving enough information and being ambiguous enough on the subject to meet with the approval of others involved. She still felt like shuddering inside when she thought of the walking corpse-like hunter.

"... So in short, you're not sure what it is,," Fred said, after some thought. While he didn't understand everything that she said, exactly, he was fairly certain it boiled down to 'I don't know'. After a moment, it occurred to him... "Wait, so does that mean it's not rabies, then?"
drkenison: (Working)

[personal profile] drkenison 2013-02-05 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
I don't need the name to know what the virus is, what vectors transmit it or what the outcomes are from infection.

She shook her head and just a bit of worry crept into her expression. No, I don't believe it is a strain of rabies. At the very least it is not a strain that I have ever seen.

"Oh." Fred shrugged. "Well, point is, it's somethin' you don't want to catch, I reckon, right?"
drkenison: (Working)

[personal profile] drkenison 2013-02-05 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
No, I wouldn't want to catch it. She nodded in agreement. Most new diseases are the most deadly and detrimental in the time when treatment is not available. I don't know of any treatments for this virus existing.

"Well, fair enough. This is gonna be troublesome for the business season - folk usually come to me to get their beavers stuffed for Valentine's Day, but if the hunting season is cut short, business'll be slow this year," Fred said, frowning.

She thought about his comment and nodded. If people are afraid they will shoot more animals but I am not sure they will want to handle them with the possibility of disease.
